Find the county for a street address

A ZIP code gives the likely county; an address gives the certain one. Enter the full address in the free Census Geocoder (choose “Find Geographies”), and it returns the county, census tract and block for that location. Property tax bills and county assessor websites also state the county for a parcel.

Why one ZIP code can be in two counties

ZIP codes were drawn for mail delivery, not for government boundaries. A carrier route can cross a county line, and rural ZIP codes often serve parts of two or three counties. A ZIP recorded under a city name may also reach into unincorporated county land.

Townships and other local areas

In states with civil townships, such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and New Jersey, a ZIP code is even less reliable for finding your township or municipality, because several can share one ZIP. Check the county's GIS parcel viewer or your property tax bill, which name the taxing township.
