The postal field guide

How to find your billing ZIP code

Your billing ZIP code is the ZIP code of the billing address your bank or card issuer has on file for your credit or debit card. Merchants ask for it so the card network can check it against the issuer's records. It is not printed anywhere on the card itself.

Where is the ZIP code on a card?

Nowhere: cards show the number, name, expiry date and security code, but not a postal code. The billing ZIP comes from the address on your account, which you can find on a statement, in your bank's app or website under profile or contact details, or by calling the number on the back of the card.

What “ZIP code verification” means

When you type a ZIP at checkout or at a gas pump, the merchant sends it with the payment request and the issuer answers whether it matches. This is part of an address verification service used in the U.S. and some other countries. A mismatch can cause a decline even when the card is valid.

Why a payment is declined

  • You moved and your bank still has the old address.
  • You entered a shipping or work ZIP instead of the billing ZIP.
  • A leading zero was dropped (2108 instead of 02108).
  • A prepaid card has not been registered with an address yet.

Cards issued outside the United States

Address verification is mainly a U.S. and Canadian system. With a foreign card, ask the issuer or the merchant what to enter; policies vary, and guessing a five-digit number will not help.

Is my billing ZIP my home ZIP?

Usually, if your bank has your current home address. To confirm your home ZIP, search your city in the ZIP code lookup or your street address with USPS, then check it matches your bank's records.
