Mainland China uses six-digit postal codes (邮政编码). The first two digits identify a province, autonomous region or municipality, for example 10 for Beijing and 20 for Shanghai; the next two identify a postal zone and the last two a delivery post office.
Look up a postal code
China Post provides the official postal code search. Because Chinese addresses are written from the largest unit (province) to the smallest (building), search with the province, city and district first.
Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan
Hong Kong and Macau do not use postal codes; forms that require one usually accept 000000 or 999077 by convention, but ask the recipient. Taiwan has its own three- or six-digit system administered by Chunghwa Post.
Addressing mail to China
Write the address in English with the postal code before the city and province, and add “CHINA” on the last line, or include the address in Chinese characters if you have it, which speeds local delivery.
Not a U.S. ZIP
Six-digit Chinese codes are not valid in the U.S. ZIP code lookup. See International postal codes for other countries.
