India's postal code is the PIN code (Postal Index Number), a six-digit number such as 110001. It plays the same role as a U.S. ZIP code, but this site's location tool only covers U.S. ZIP codes. To find the PIN code of your location in India, use India Post's official search with your area or post office name.
Find the PIN code of your location
- Open India Post and choose the PIN code search (“Know your PIN code” or “Find Pincode”).
- Search by your state, district and post office or locality name.
- Use the six-digit PIN of the post office that delivers to your address.
Your PIN code also appears on letters and parcels addressed to you and on most utility bills.
What the six digits mean
The first digit indicates a postal region of the country, the first two digits together a postal circle (generally a state or group of states), the first three a sorting district, and the last three the specific delivery post office. PIN codes beginning with 9 are used by the Army Postal Service.
PIN code vs. ZIP code
A U.S. form asking for a “ZIP code” means your postal code; for an Indian address, enter the six-digit PIN code exactly. The formats are not interchangeable, and a U.S. ZIP lookup will not recognise an Indian PIN. See ZIP code vs. postal code.
